A Simplex for the Garden

Having shown little bits and pieces related to the 16mm scale Simplex locomotive I'm currently building I thought I should really show some photos of the locomotive itself.

The model is based around a kit, designed by Phil Sharples, that I bought from eBay. I say "based around" as the kit consisted mostly of laser cut MDF parts and as you can see there are quite a few parts on mine which aren't MDF. I'd already shown sandboxes (not fitted in the photos) in a previous post, but you can see I've also printed a replacement radiator as well as coupling blocks, bolt heads and chassis side frames. There are also a few other detailing parts that I've replaced or added which you either can't see in the photo or which haven't been fitted yet. I've also replaced the plastic wheels that came with the kit with some nice steel ones. Still quite a lot of work to do but it's beginning to come together nicely and the 3D printer is proving very useful in helping me quickly producing detailing parts as I go along.

  1. Nice radiator. Rebuilt a full sized one once - hard work fitting all those tubes in place with their sealing bungs.

  2. Something of a sensible size here. Next a 2.5" gauge. Looking good.
Blender is slowly heading towards an Everything Node interface. I see in 2.92 alpha they have experimental geometry nodes so hopefully a Boolean node. I'll have a look at it this week sometime.

    1. Hi Mark, yes the parts your Dad asked for should be in the post, although we're a little worried they may have got lost. I'll send out replacements if that turns out to be the case. I can probably print more of the other detailing parts if you wanted them. I didn't include them in the initial set as I just included the generic parts that would work for any 16mm scale Simplex rather than a specific kit; for example the coupling blocks aren't quite the prototype size as they match the slightly different size of the kit.

I did wonder about putting the Simplex logo on the coupling blocks but the few example locos I looked had plain coupling blocks. It should be easy to add them to the model though.

Your Dad has my e-mail address so feel free to drop me an e-mail if you want specific parts or modifications etc. and I'm sure we can work something out.
