Alan Keef Ltd K12 Diesel Locomotive

The K12 diesel locomotive, designed and built by Alan Keef Ltd, was intended to provide a simple but effective power unit for use on lightly laid and temporary tracks. Six locomotives were built between 1976 and 1982, all of which were initially destined for use on British peat railways. This kit is based upon AK6 of 1981 which was original built for working on a 2' 6'' gauge line but has since been regauged to 15'' making it a good match to both OO9 and OO6.5.

The model is available as a kit, for both OO9 and OO6.5, exclusively through Narrow Planet. The kit is comprised of a 3D printed plastic footplate and a fret of etched nickel silver body and detailing parts. The body requires some delicate folding and a hold-and-fold (or similar) is recommended. The model is designed to be assembled using superglue, although a small amount of soldering is necessary to complete the electrical connections on the OO9 gauge model.

I documented the development of the kit in some detail across a number of posts on this blog (unfortunately they get listed in reverse order when you follow that link).

I've also been involved with writing two articles which appeared in issue 119 of Narrow Gauge and Industrial Railway Modelling REVIEW. The first of these articles is a detailed discussion of the design and build of the model kit. The second is a description and works list of the K12 class, for which I was lucky enough to have Alan Keef as a co-author.
